MLA Style: Basics

This guide is meant to be a brief introduction to MLA and to provide general formatting and citation guidelines for this manual of style.

What is MLA Style?

MLA Style is a citation protocol established by the Modern Language Association (MLA) for the humanities--English, literature, foreign languages, etc.  In April 2016, MLA published the eighth edition of the handbook and it was adopted by LSCC Libraries in August 2016. In 2021, MLA released the MLA Handbook ninth edition. This new handbook retains the MLA unique system of documentation established in the eighth edition. However, it expands on explanations of previous editions on how to properly cite sources; guidance on formatting papers; quoting and paraphrasing; avoiding plagiarism; and entirely new sections on inclusive language, annotated bibliographies, and notes.
